Yi was born and raised in a small village in Burma. Amid political unrest, her village was destroyed, and she and her husband were forced to flee the country. They spent two years living in a resettlement camp in Thailand before eventually arriving in the United States.

Those first months were challenging. Everything—from the culture and weather to the food—was unfamiliar. Yi did not speak or read English and did not understand how to access or navigate care.

Yi came to Clinic with a Heart accompanied by an outreach volunteer from First Baptist Church, who helped arrange an interpreter for her visit. She had been feeling unwell for several months and, given all she had experienced, was understandably worried. During her visit, Yi learned that she was pregnant—a discovery that brought her great joy.

Before she left, a discharge volunteer spent time helping Yi understand the importance of prenatal care. With continued support from the outreach volunteer, Yi was connected to the appropriate appointments to ensure both she and her baby would receive the care they needed.
